Elmira Maple Syrup Festival Cancels 2020 Edition Due to Coronavirus Concerns

Elmira Maple Syrup Festival committee announced that they are cancelling 2020 edition of Elmira Maple Syrup Festival, for the first time in 56 years following COVID-19 global pandemic declaration by the World Health Organization.

The festival was scheduled to take place on April 4, 2020 during the same time as Ontario Maple Weekend.

The committee said that this difficult decision was taken after conducting a thorough risk assessment as recommended by the Public Health Agency of Canada.

Elmira Maple Syrup Festival is one of the biggest community fundraisers in Waterloo Region and supports the local Woolwich Community.

The committee said, “The decision made tonight ultimately it comes down to public safety. In our 56th year, this is not the time to be rolling the dice and hope that we’re doing the right thing. This is about protecting people, and family, and right now there are too many risks.”

“It is a difficult decision, but we needed to think with our heads, not our hearts. The cancellation of the Elmira Maple Syrup Festival follows the cancellation of many other local events.

“Our direction is now focused on new ways to support the Elmira Community and Waterloo Region this year, as we have always focused on when planning the festival.

Yesterday, NBA announced that it is suspending all games in its 2020 season until further notice after a Utah Jazz player tested positive for the pandemic COVID-19.

As of yesterday night, there are 37 active coronavirus cases and 5 resolved (the patient no longer infectious based on two consecutive negative tests performed at PHO Laboratory at least 24 hours apart) cases in Ontario.
