3. RAO Open House
Theme: Naming Constellations Greco-Roman Style. In the sky – Orion continues the eternal chase of Taurus the bull while the big dog Canis Major follows creating a spectacular display in the southern sky. Each open house we welcome the knowledgeable and intrepid volunteers from the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada – Calgary Chapter. Visitors will have the opportunity to look through the RAO’s array of telescopes (weather permitting), with astronomers from the University of Calgary and members of the Royal Astronomical Society on hand to answer questions. Erin Shields’s 2015 Soliciting Temptation gives audiences a glimpse into the hidden world of underage sexual tourism. When an unnamed, middle-aged white Man (Mattie Overall) meets a likewise unnamed young – possibly too young – eastern Girl (Patricia Cerra), we are offered a fictional slice of this dark practice. What begins as a seeming rendezvous between consenting individuals quickly takes an unexpected turn as the Girl seizes control of the situation and declares herself the swift hand of justice, threatening to reveal the Man as a pedophile and sexual tourist, destroying his credibility, career and life. Melding the artistry of acoustic music with the dance-floor sensibility of electronica, Cabaret Contemporain, signed to well known Berlin electro/experimental label, perform a beat driven improvisational work that will have you dancing in the aisles. Transistor is a work of hypnosis and power, colours and dance, and is a mix of improvised music falling between techno-minimal and contemporary music. It bears similarities to Four Tet, Voices From The Lake, Brandt Bauer Frick, James Holden and Daphni/Caribou. Cabaret Contemporain has signed on electro/experimental label M=Minimal in Berlin..
