Whitchurch-Stouffville is celebrating its 21st Doors Open event on June 7, 2025, featuring 16 sites and a self-guided walking tour, offering the public unique experiences to explore the town’s rich heritage and culture.
The event, part of the provincial initiative Door Open Ontario, will showcase cultural, architectural, and environmental heritage through various activities and partnerships, highlighting interesting examples of adaptive reuse.
Here are the notable places to visit during the event:
- Historical Walking Tour: Rails, Roads and Restoration(6176 Main Street): Designated a Heritage Conservation District in 2024, the area flourished after the Toronto and Nipissing Railway arrived in 1871. This 1.5-hour guided tour starts at the Stouffville GO Station and highlights the town’s Heritage Awards and Commemorative Plaque Program.
- Bruce’s Mill Conservation Area (3291 Stouffville Road): Experience a variety of outdoor activities, from disc golf to a BMX track, and learn about conservation efforts in this expansive park.
- Blue & Silver Farm (17019 Woodbine Avenue): A 75-acre property built in 1860 and donated to Pickering College in 2021 by educator Charles Boyd, offers rich outdoor learning experiences. Visitors can tour the historic farmhouse, 1905 barn, greenhouses, forests, and an outdoor kitchen, all designed to support education in a natural setting and honour Boyd’s lasting legacy in teaching and community.
- Community Garden Opening (99 Reeves Way Blvd.): The Community Garden opening at the Jean-Baptiste Lainé Site features a special program led by Jay Shea of the Odeiwin Foundation. The event includes a land acknowledgment with words and songs, a plant identification tour, and a seed-pack giveaway.
- Richmond Hill Live Steamers (15922 McCowan Road): Discover the fascination of miniature railways with demonstrations and limited rides at this outdoor model railway, featuring historical train replicas.
- Holy Theotokos Convent/Joyous Light Candles (4369 Faulkner Avenue): Tour the Greek Orthodox convent and candle factory, enjoy Greek culinary treats, and learn about the convent’s history and adaptations.
- Lemonville Community Centre (13453 McCowan Road): Originally built in 1923 as S.S. #9, the Lemonville School closed in 1969 and was reborn as the Lemonville Community Centre in 1972. Visitors can explore its past, meet local volunteers, and learn why it earned the 2023 Whitchurch-Stouffville Heritage Award.
- Bill Fisch Forest Stewardship and Education Centre (16389 Highway 48, Stouffville): Celebrate York Regional Forest at this LEED platinum-certified building. Enjoy a guided tour, educational programming, and learn about sustainable building practices using local and recycled materials.
- Jean-Baptiste Lainé Site (99 Reeves Way Blvd): Dive into the history of a late-16th-century ancestral Wendat community at one of Southern Ontario’s largest archaeological sites through self-guided tours and staffed interpretation table.
- Memorial Park Multi-Purpose Trail (2 Park Drive): Opened in 2024, the Memorial Park Multi-Purpose Trail offers a 275-metre (900-foot) accessible loop for year-round use. In warmer months, it welcomes walkers, scooter users, and rollerbladers, while supporting winter sports during colder seasons. Visitors can enjoy the trail at their own pace and stop by the nearby facility to view the ice resurfacer that helps maintain the space.
- Morra Caruso Law (6060 Main Street): Built in 1885 for the village veterinarian, this heritage home now serves as the office of Morra Caruso Law. The building retains original features like pocket doors, detailed wood baseboards, and plaster crown moulding. Visitors can enjoy a guided tour, refreshments, and a photo presentation in the boardroom.
- Muddy York Brewing Co.(50 Innovator Avenue, Unit #1): Opened in 2023, Muddy York Brewing Co. is Stouffville’s only brewery and a popular gathering spot for residents and visitors alike. During Doors Open, guests are invited to take a staff-led tour of the facility and learn about their locally crafted beverages.
- Ontario SPCA York Region Animal Centre (16586 Woodbine Avenue): Participate in educational tours, interact with animals, and explore a vendor market at this center dedicated to animal welfare.
- Richardson Masonic Lodge No. 136 (279 Second Street): Visitors can explore the lodge through guided tours, historical presentations, and a fundraiser, with light refreshments available. Don’t miss the unique sundial at the entrance during your visit.
- Stained Glass Centre for the Performing Arts (34 Church Street North): During Doors Open, visitors can enjoy live entertainment, a bake sale, refreshments, and a demonstration of the venue’s sound and lighting system, all while exploring the building’s historical charm, which was constructed in 1892.
- Whitchurch Stouffville Food Bank (86 Ringwood Drive, Unit #24): During your visit, take a self-guided tour, explore behind the scenes, and learn practical food sorting skills. Visitors can also discover inspiring recipes, offering a deeper look into the vital work carried out by this community-driven facility.
- Whitchurch-Stouffville Museum & Community Centre (14732 Woodbine Avenue): During your visit, explore behind-the-scenes areas to learn how artifacts (18,000) move from donation to display. Highlights include heritage buildings, exhibition galleries, and the newly restored Bogarttown Schoolhouse, offering a comprehensive look at the community’s preserved past.
