The festival returns June 3 to 28 for its 20th anniversary, stretching across four weeks for the first time. More than 1,000 artists will take part in over 140 performances and 50 events staged at more than 25 locations across the city.

This year’s theme, PLAY, shapes the entire program. It is not just about fun. Organizers say it explores imagination, power, and even questions of fairness through art, performance, and public installations.

Celia Smith, CEO of Luminato, describes the festival as a reflection of Toronto itself, while Artistic Director Olivia Ansell points to a mix of joy, nostalgia, and deeper storytelling woven into this year’s lineup.

Audiences can expect everything from theatre and dance to circus, music, and large-scale public art. Highlights include Lovin’ You: The Minnie Riperton Story featuring Divine Brown, and KATMA by Azzam Mohamed, which invites audiences into an immersive dance experience.

Public art also plays a big role. Installations such as Anthems to Colour and Pyramid Fields aim to reshape familiar locations into interactive environments. These works encourage people to engage with public spaces differently, turning everyday areas into places of reflection, movement, and shared experience throughout the festival.

Free events remain central, with programming at Harbourfront, Sankofa Square and Lower Jarvis. These spaces offer a mix of performances, music and interactive activities, making it easier for people to take part without needing a ticket and helping create a more inclusive festival atmosphere.
