What to Expect
What is New and What to See and Do
This year’s festival combines returning favourites with several new additions as it marks its 15th anniversary. One of the highlights is the appearance of the Hands of Lugh Viking Age Living History reenactors, who will present demonstrations that recreate aspects of Viking-era life and traditions. To commemorate the milestone year, organizers will also screen a 15th anniversary reflection video alongside a family-friendly short film program presented by the Gimli International Film Festival.
The 4th annual Gimli Red River Métis/EIWD Indigenous Artisan and Vendor Market will also return on March 7 from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Lakeview Gimli Resort, featuring a selection of Indigenous artwork, crafts and handmade items from local vendors.
Several competitions and demonstrations are planned throughout the weekend. One of them is the Polar Games team competition, scheduled for March 8 at 1:00 p.m. at Gimli Harbour. Teams of four will compete in four challenges, with the top three teams awarded gold, silver and bronze medals. Participation is limited to the first 12 teams that register.
Another key event is the 7th annual Viking’s Challenge, taking place March 7 from 8:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Participants commit to walking or running a chosen number of kilometres while raising funds. The proceeds from the event support skin cancer patients across Canada. People who cannot attend in person can still take part by completing the challenge virtually during the festival weekend.
