The Malahat SkyWalk has unveiled “The Overhang,” a fully enclosed glass cube that extends 2.13 metres beyond the edge of its spiral tower. Suspended 250 metres above sea level, the structure places guests high above the landscape with nothing but transparent glass beneath and around them.

It is being described as the first glass cube of its kind attached to a spiral tower anywhere in the world, and the only one in Canada. The design leans into the sensation of height, offering uninterrupted views of the Pacific Ocean, forested terrain, and the inlets and mountains that shape Vancouver Island.

Nathan Bird, general manager of the SkyWalk, says the addition was built with thrill-seekers in mind, calling it a way to push visitors slightly outside their comfort zone while staying connected to the surrounding environment.

The cube itself is compact, measuring 2.13 metres on each side, but built with layered structural glass for strength. The walls and ceiling are 36 millimetres thick, while the floor is 60 millimetres. Engineering firm Aspect, which also designed the tower, led its development.

The Overhang sits atop the SkyWalk’s 10-storey spiral tower, reached by a gently sloping ramp that would stretch 500 metres if laid end to end. Once at the top, visitors can step onto an 84-square-metre suspended adventure net or take a 20-metre enclosed spiral slide back to the ground.

Malahat SkyWalk, located 30 minutes from Victoria, includes a 600-metre elevated TreeWalk rising 20 metres through arbutus and Douglas fir forest, as well as a cantilevered lookout and an 800-metre return trail at ground level.
