GM Canada has announced that it is retooling portions of the Oshawa plant to produce face masks for health care professionals and for other Canadians.

GM Canada plans to make approximately one million masks per month at cost for the Canadian government.

According to the news release, the production will run with an estimate of 50 employees supporting two shifts of production, which will be based on the GM production model already working in Michigan.

Minister Navdeep Bains tweeted saying, “We’ve signed a letter of intent with General Motors. They are working to retool their Oshawa assembly plant to help with mask production here in Canada.”

Unifor National President Jerry Dias said, “Unifor members in Oshawa are highly skilled and proud to step up and make whatever our country needs to get through this pandemic. The fact that Unifor members will help GM produce as many as a million fabric masks a month, for Health Canada at cost, is an example of what we can do when we work together.

Recently, Bombardier Inc. announced that is helping to produce 18,000 ventilators for the Ontario government at its temporarily shuttered plant in Thunder Bay, Ont.
