Health Canada has launched a voluntary registry that allows people to sign up for direct alerts about recalls and safety concerns. Marjorie Michel, Minister of Health, says the goal is to give patients clearer, more immediate access to information.

Until now, the process has been more indirect. When a recall happens, manufacturers notify healthcare facilities, and those facilities decide how to reach affected patients. The new registry adds another layer, letting individuals subscribe to updates themselves.

The alerts are not limited to patients. Healthcare professionals and others can also sign up, creating a wider network of people receiving the same information at the same time.

Health Canada already tracks the safety of medical devices through several channels. Manufacturers and public hospitals are required to report incidents, while healthcare professionals and members of the public can submit reports voluntarily. Companies must also flag serious risks identified in other countries.

The new registry builds on an existing email subscription service, which covers broader safety updates related to breast implants. This version focuses more specifically on recalls.
