Calgary’s Olympic Speed Skating Oval has cancelled two international speed skating events that were to be held at the Olympic Oval this month.

Long Track Grand Prix which was scheduled for March 14 and 15 and the Long Track Finale on March 19 to 22 were cancelled as COVID-19 has spread to many parts of the world. Short Track Canada Cup Final and Long Track Canada Cup #4 will continue as planned for Canadian athletes.

The statement from Olympic Oval said, “To compete, Canadian athletes and their coaches/support staff should be free from any illness symptoms for a minimum of 14 days and have not traveled through countries on the UCalgary restricted travel list, which currently includes: China, Hong Kong, Japan, Iran, Italy, South Korea, and Singapore.”

Currently in Canada, the total positive COVID-19 cases stand at 51, with 21 cases in British Columbia, 1 in Alberta, 26 in Ontario and 3 in Quebec. Of these 51, 8 cases, 4 each in B.C. and Ontario were fully resolved, with each of those patients having two consecutive negative tests at least 24 hours apart.

Yesterday, Alberta Health reported the province’s first case of COVID-19 on a woman who recently returned from travel on board a Grand Princess cruise ship in California.
