As autumn unfurls its golden hues, hikers are lacing up for the spectacular journey through Larch Valley, nestled by the pristine Moraine Lake in Banff National Park. Known for its breathtaking views and vibrant golden larches, this trail is a favourite among those who crave a visual feast during the fall.

The path is well-established, ensuring hikers can enjoy their experience without fear of getting lost. However, it is advisable to start the hike early in the day as the trail typically becomes crowded as the day progresses.

Getting to the location also requires some planning. Moraine Lake Road is closed to private vehicles. Hence, you should book private bus tours or public transportation.

Public transportation options are available through either the ROAM Transit system, which serves Canmore and Banff, or the Parks Canada Park and Ride shuttle.

Roam Transit’s Route 10 Moraine Lake Express is not in service this season. Instead, Route 8X Banff–Lake Louise Express will run on a consistent schedule through October 13, with departures from Banff High School Transit Hub and stops at Lake Louise Village and the Lake Louise Lakeshore.

The Reservable Super Pass, valid for one day, provides unlimited travel on all Roam Transit services and a round-trip on Parks Canada’s Lake Connector Shuttle between Lake Louise Lakeshore and Moraine Lake. The Super Pass costs $30 for adults, $15 for seniors and youth aged 13–18, while children under 12 are free but still require a reservation. Passes are only sold round-trip and expire at midnight on the travel date.

Parks Canada shuttles to Moraine Lake operate until October 13. The Lake Connector Shuttle operates between Lake Louise and Moraine Lake from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., with boarding available only to reservation holders or Roam Super Pass users. The last Lake Connector departures are 5:30 p.m. from Lake Louise and 7:00 p.m. from Moraine Lake.

For the season, 40 per cent of Parks Canada shuttle seats are available for advance reservation, while the remaining 60 per cent are released at 8:00 a.m. two days before travel. Reservations for the Lake Louise – Banff Express Route 8X are now open.

Alternative transportation options include private bus tours, providing various ways for visitors to access this scenic hike during the peak fall foliage period.
