New MB Ready App Aims to Keep Manitobans Informed During Emergencies

Manitoba is marking Emergency Preparedness Week (May 3 to 9) with a new tool to help residents stay informed during emergencies.

The province is encouraging people to think ahead about how they would respond in a crisis, while also launching the MB Ready app. Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Lisa Naylor, who oversees the Emergency Management Organization, says the goal is simple: make it easier for Manitobans to access clear, timely information when it matters most.

The app, now available in both official languages, serves as a public emergency information platform. It sends real-time, location-based alerts for situations such as severe weather, wildfires, floods, road closures, and power outages. Users can customize notifications by setting specific addresses or areas, whether that is home, work, or somewhere else they rely on.

Beyond alerts, the app also focuses on preparation. It includes guidance on building emergency kits, creating household plans, and understanding risks specific to different communities.

Officials are using the week as a prompt for people to take practical steps, whether that means updating an emergency kit or having a conversation with family members and neighbours about what to do if something unexpected happens.

As part of the week, Manitoba will also take part in a scheduled test of Canada’s national public alerting system, with an emergency alert set for 1:55 p.m. on May 6.
