Parks Canada has set out this year’s restriction dates for alcohol and cannabis use in Banff National Park, along with a detailed list of affected campgrounds.
Per the seasonal order issued April 1, Parks Canada has outlined the dates on which a full ban on both substances applies. The restrictions apply over three long weekends: May 15 to 18 for Victoria Day, July 31 to August 3 for Heritage Day, and September 4 to 7 for Labour Day. The ban begins at 7 a.m. on the first day and ends at 11 a.m. on the last.
The rules cover a wide range of campgrounds across the park, including Tunnel Mountain Village I and II, Two Jack Lakeside and Main, Johnston Canyon, Lake Louise Hard-sided, Soft-sided and Overflow, Castle Mountain, Mosquito Creek, Protection Mountain, Rampart Creek, Silverhorn Creek, Tunnel Mountain Trailer Court, and Waterfowl Lakes.
Outside of long weekends, alcohol use is still limited. It is only permitted at registered campsites, private residences, or licensed locations. It is not allowed at beaches, day use areas, cook shelters, or on trails. Both alcohol and cannabis are also restricted overnight, from 11 p.m. to 7 a.m.

On other days, Cannabis use follows separate rules. Campers may consume it at their own campsite with a valid permit, but not in shared spaces such as playgrounds, washrooms, roads, or shelters. Smoking or vaping is also not allowed inside oTENTiks or equipped tents.
Within the Town of Banff, municipal bylaws prohibit smoking or vaping cannabis in all public places, including areas like the Banff Visitor Centre and Banff Avenue Square.
Anyone who breaks these rules could face eviction, cancellation of their camping permit, or fines under the Canada National Parks Act, with penalties reaching up to $25,000.
