A recall has been issued for several Pillsbury brand Pizza Pops products after they were linked to a foodborne illness outbreak involving E. coli O26.

Health officials say the contaminated products may not show visible signs of spoilage but can still cause serious illness.

The recall follows an investigation by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency, which identified the affected Pizza Pops during a broader outbreak review. The Public Health Agency of Canada is continuing to investigate the illnesses.

So far, 20 laboratory-confirmed cases of E. coli O26:H11 have been reported across five provinces. Alberta has recorded the highest number with nine cases, followed by Saskatchewan with five, British Columbia with three, Ontario with two, and New Brunswick with one. Four people were hospitalized, and no deaths have been reported. Those affected range in age from 1 to 87 years, with cases evenly split between males and females.

The recalled items include several Pepperoni + Bacon varieties sold under the Pillsbury brand, including packages of 4, 8, and 30 pizza snacks, as well as Supremo Extreme and FRANK’s RedHot versions with the same flavour combination.

Health officials warn that E. coli infection can cause symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, stomach cramps, and diarrhea, which may become bloody. In more severe cases, complications can include kidney failure, seizures, or the need for hospitalization.

Consumers are advised to check their freezers for the recalled products and not to eat, serve, sell, or distribute them. Recalled items should be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase. Anyone who believes they became ill after consuming the products should contact a healthcare provider.

Authorities note that the actual number of illnesses may be higher, as many cases are not reported. The investigation remains ongoing.
