Plan a Fall Day Trip to Meaford for Scarecrows, Hikes and Georgian Bay Views

By the time fall colours begin to settle over Georgian Bay, Meaford has another seasonal sight to look for. Hundreds of handmade scarecrows start appearing throughout downtown, around public spaces and on front lawns, giving visitors a reason to slow down and explore the town on foot.

The Meaford Scarecrow Invasion runs until October 18, 2026, with hundreds of locally made scarecrows displayed around the community. The busiest day is Friday, October 2, when the annual parade and family festival add food, activities and entertainment to the mix.

For visitors planning a fall drive through Grey County, it also works well as part of a larger day trip, especially when combined with nearby hikes, Georgian Bay viewpoints or other seasonal events happening the same weekend.

Start with the scarecrows downtown

The Scarecrow Invasion is spread through the community rather than confined to a single festival ground, so you can explore it at your own pace.

This year marks the event’s 30th anniversary, with scarecrows built around the 2026 theme, “Peace, Love & Happiness.”

If you can choose your date, Friday, October 2 offers the most activity. The Scarecrow Parade begins at 6 p.m. on Sykes Street, followed by the free Family Festival at Meaford Harbour from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

The festival includes family activities, entertainment, vendors and food. Apple pie is also part of the tradition, with entries from the annual Apple Pie Contest sold by the slice and winning pies auctioned during the evening.

Add a fall walk or Georgian Bay view

You do not have to drive far after exploring downtown.

Beautiful Joe Park, near the centre of Meaford, is an easy addition. Trails follow the Bighead River and connect toward the Bighead River Conservation Area, making this one of the simplest ways to add a walk without substantially extending the day.

For a broader view, drive about 7 km from downtown to Irish Mountain Lookout. The short trail leads to views across Georgian Bay and the surrounding countryside, making it a particularly easy stop during fall colour season.

If you want a longer nature break, Hibou Conservation Area, about 24 km west of Meaford, has roughly 4.5 km of trails and boardwalks near Georgian Bay.

Have more time? Continue to Owen Sound

Owen Sound is roughly 30 km from Meaford, so it works well as a second stop.

Fall visitors can follow the city’s self-guided Salmon Tour during the annual Chinook salmon migration. On October 3, 2026, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., representatives from the Sydenham Sportsmen’s Association and Grey Sauble Conservation Authority will be at the Mill Dam to help visitors learn about the migrating fish. Salmon sightings depend on water and weather conditions.

The same weekend also brings the Autumn Leaves Studio Tour, running October 2 to 4, with artists opening studios across Grey and Bruce counties.

If you have time, you can even squeeze in a few waterfalls!

Taken together, the scarecrows, short hikes and Georgian Bay scenery make Meaford particularly well suited to a relaxed fall road trip rather than a single-stop festival visit.
