Per the news release, the police were alerted around 5 a.m. on the early morning of March 7, 2024, to the fire at a plaza near Major Mackenzie Drive East and Leslie Street.
Upon arrival, police discovered the vehicle fully ablaze, a scene captured by nearby surveillance.
Surveillance video shows a dark blue sedan stopping behind a red SUV, from which two individuals in hooded attire emerged.
These suspects, each carrying a can of liquid, approached parked white GMC tow trucks, poured the liquid over it, and ignited the vehicle with a flammable object.
The driver of the truck managed to escape shortly after the fire began.
Per the news release, the other tow truck was also doused with liquid but managed to pull away without catching fire.
The blaze not only consumed the tow truck but also inflicted damage on an adjacent business, though, fortunately, Richmond Hill Fire and Emergency Services were quick to extinguish the fire, preventing any injuries.
York Regional Police is now seeking assistance from the public. It urges witnesses or anyone with video evidence of suspicious activity in the vicinity to come forward to help identify the suspects.
The investigation remains active, with the police requesting that anyone with information contact the York Regional Police #2 District Criminal Investigations Bureau, Crime Stoppers, or submit tips online.
