CAA has released its annual list of worst roads in Ontario.

Aberdeen Avenue in Hamilton has been named the CAA Worst Road in Ontario for 2024, a first for the street. Potholes, traffic congestion, and lack of maintenance contributed to its ranking. Close behind were Eglinton Avenue West in Toronto and Barton Street East in Hamilton, similarly plagued by poor conditions.

The CAA Worst Roads list, now in its 21st year, helps highlight roads in need of urgent repair. It has been instrumental in influencing infrastructure improvements and budget prioritization. According to Teresa Di Felice, Assistant Vice President of Government and Community Relations at CAA South Central Ontario, this initiative empowers Ontarians to voice concerns over their local roads.

The campaign revealed that the majority of nominations came from drivers, with cyclists and pedestrians contributing around 25%. The main grievances were potholes (53%), inadequate maintenance (52%), and congestion (13%).

The top ten list, verified by the Residential and Civil Construction Alliance of Ontario (RCCAO), calls for sustainable funding to address the growing backlog of infrastructure repairs.

This year’s list featured roads from 145 municipalities, demonstrating widespread concern across the province. Di Felice emphasized the importance of community input in determining municipal spending priorities, particularly as these governments manage limited revenue sources.

Top regional roads include Laclie Street in Orillia, County Road 49 in Prince Edward, and Hurontario Street in Mississauga among others, reflecting a province-wide need for infrastructure attention.
