This initiative developed collaboratively with provincial and territorial governments, replaces the General Education Development (GED) program, which ended in May 2024. The CAEC is tailored to Canada’s education system and reflects diverse cultural perspectives.
The CAEC consists of five subject tests—reading, writing, mathematics, science, and social studies. These tests are offered in English and French and are delivered through a user-friendly online platform. Accommodations will be available for individuals with specific learning needs. The program is free for Island residents, aligning with the former GED structure.
Testing will be facilitated by Holland College, with registration now open and testing beginning in December.
According to Jenn Redmond, Minister of Workforce, Advanced Learning and Population, the CAEC provides a flexible, accessible opportunity for Islanders to achieve their personal and professional aspirations. “It is important to offer Islanders the chance to obtain a high school equivalency, so they can achieve their goals and positively contribute to the workforce,” said Redmond.
Eligibility for the CAEC in Prince Edward Island includes being a resident of the province, a Canadian citizen or permanent resident, at least 18 years old, not currently enrolled in high school, and not already holding a GED or high school certificate.
Those who have previously passed GED tests before May 3, 2024, can have their scores counted toward the CAEC until May 2027. The GED will continue to be recognized as a valid credential that does not expire, and individuals who already hold a GED are not required to complete the CAEC.
For those preparing to take the CAEC tests, sample tests and test outcomes are available on the CAEC website to help guide study efforts. Successful test-takers will receive a Prince Edward Island High School Equivalency Certificate.
This new program aims to provide adults without a high school diploma the opportunity to obtain a credential that can open doors to further education and employment opportunities.
