The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has introduced a temporary ban on pistachios and pistachio-based products imported from Iran, citing risks linked to an ongoing Salmonella outbreak.
As part of the measure, all importers with a Safe Food for Canadians licence must provide proof that shipments of pistachios do not originate from Iran. Without this documentation, products will either be refused entry or detained for Salmonella testing.
The Public Health Agency of Canada is leading the outbreak investigation, which has recorded more than 100 confirmed Salmonella infections across the country. Several food recall notices have also been issued for pistachio kernels and related items traced back to Iran.
The CFIA said the restrictions will remain in place while it reviews data from the food safety investigation, along with findings from ongoing surveillance and importer inspections.
To ensure compliance, inspectors will continue monitoring importers. Failure to meet federal requirements could result in penalties, suspension or cancellation of import licences, or prosecution.
