The federal government is proposing to provide up to $742.4 million for one-time payments to some low-income seniors who are experiencing financial hardship due to COVID-19.
Some seniors who received the Canada Emergency Response Benefit (CERB) or the Canada Recovery Benefit (CRB) in 2020 saw their Guaranteed Income Supplement reduced because of the income they received from these pandemic benefits.
“I am committed to improving the supports and benefits available to seniors, especially those with the greatest need,” said Minister of Seniors, Kamal Khera announcing the proposal. “This one-time payment would help improve the financial situation of GIS and Allowance recipients who received the CERB/CRB and saw reductions in GIS, as they navigate the continued financial pressures related to COVID-19. The pandemic hit low-income seniors particularly hard, and the Government of Canada will continue to provide them with the support they need.”
As per the news release, the targeted, one-time payment is proposed to go to an estimated 183,000 GIS recipients and 21,000 Allowance recipients who received CERB/CRB in 2020, and who faced a reduction or loss of GIS benefits in July 2021.
The government says seniors would not need to take any action to receive the one-time payment.

When is this one time payment happening we’re waiting and waiting and waiting
I had assumed I qualified for the cerb payments because they had accepted my information, so then without notice I was cut back from my pension, I could see paying back a small amount when found out about not qualified but not 90% 900.of my monthly income, due to this I have been unable to make it through and due to this I’m now considered homeless
Does this mean. All senior
I totally agree, the 500.00 given HAS BEEN USED ALREADY! Use your common sense, the costs of our LIVING (seniors ) has been used. Now what are we suppose to do? You help for children taken care of at 10.00 a day so there parents can continue to make money to put food on the table. So what are we suppose to eat, prescriptions not covered, gas to go complain to our drs. And dentists for our care. Our credit cards are to its limit. So we have to do without. Good way, to get seniors to give up on life! Answer please!
Question: Will receiving this onetime payment effect our GIS going forward in 2022?
I guess the Federal government don’t think senior’s need help they r old & not needing anything no healthcare needs food is minimal they sit @ home waiting 2 die please senior’s r people 2 they need healthy food teeth in their mouth 2 chew their food properly eye glasses & hearing aid all that cost money that we as seniors don’t have & can’t afford groceries has gone up sky high covid-19 makes it harder 2 go around 2 shop 4 some sale items
Government of Canada states payments will be in the new fiscal year which means May. So what do seniors do until then? So many are in the process of homelessness.
I hope the one time is soon as I am fully retired now and I sure could use the extra money… will we have to reapply to get the GIS come July?
Every day I am checking in bank. Not sure I will get or not.and how much .I am 67
all gov’t needs to do is change legislation ‘to exclude any covid benefits, incl but not limited to cerb, crb, crcb, crsb, in calculation of gis, retroactive to july 2021, and ongoing, and, adjust all affected file’s to reflect change, providing rebates to all who had reductions as result of covid benefits calculated in gis from july 2021’. period. takes maybe 1 day. worked there . it’s that simple. someone should take all the struggling senors to ottawwa’s front door and drop them off there. neglecting to correct this in early 2021, caused this extreme hardship for seniors, and was entirely preventible, months ago. 1-time compensation of ?$500 isn’t even close to 12 mo of -$500 and more in many cases. it’s insulting to seniors, and all canadians who WILL BE seniors.
No date given for this one time payment.
Just how much is this one time payment and does it only apply to seniors that had applied for CERB what about the other seniors??
