Ontario Science Table is recommending circuit breaker measures as the province reported 2,421 new COVID cases today.
This is 613 cases more than the number of cases reported yesterday.
The seven-day rolling average is 1676.

The latest report by Ontario Science Table says cases are predicted to increase at a rapid pace, but an immediate circuit breaker can blunt impact.

Ontario Science Table in its report says early evidence from other countries suggests Omicron can produce severe disease and without prompt intervention, ICU occupancy could reach unsustainable levels in early January.

They are recommending the following public health measures to blunt the Omicron wave:

- Circuit breakers with strong additional public health measures (at least 50% fewer contacts)
- Strong booster campaigns (250,000 per day)
- High-quality masks, physical distancing indoors, improved ventilation
- Increased access to rapid testing can help buy time for boosters to take effect and keep schools open.

Currently, there are 328 individuals hospitalized with COVID19. Of those, 256 are not fully vaccinated or have an unknown vaccination status and 72 are fully vaccinated.
The province is ramping up rapid COVID-19 testing by distributing free-of-charge rapid antigen test kits and conducting free testing at high-traffic settings such as malls, retail settings, holiday markets, public libraries, transit hubs, and at LCBOs.
Currently, 90.4% of Ontarians 12+ have one dose and 87.7% have two doses.

Ontario is expanding the eligibility for a 3rd dose or booster dose of the COVID-19 vaccine for all 18+ residents beginning this Monday, December 20th.
The province is also reducing indoor capacity limits of large venues beginning Saturday, December 18th.
