Southern Prairie Railway: Take a Scenic Tour on Saskatchewan’s Heritage Train

This summer, take a trip through picturesque prairie fields on Saskatchewan’s first full-sized tourist railway – The Southern Prairie Railway.

This historic train, “pulling the past into the future,” will take you on an adventure to Pangman and Horizon from Ogema, located approximately 115 kilometres south of Regina.

Southern Prairie Railway offers various themed train excursions on a 1925 Passenger car, pulled by a General Electric 44-ton switcher locomotive along 70 miles of private track.

Each ride includes fun activities, such as trips to the local farmers’ market, delicious food, beautiful views of prairie wildlife, and much more.

Here are some of the themed tours:

• The Morning Robbery Train Ride and the Afternoon Robbery Ride: Both of these options include a tour of the 1922 Elevator at Horizon. On this train ride, you will be “robbed” by local outlaws. All the money that has been stolen will be donated to STARS ambulance and the Saskatchewan Cancer Agency.
• The Heritage Train Ride takes you through the open prairies to Horizon, Sask. A guide will share historical facts with you on your ride. This also includes a tour of the 1922 Federal Grain Elevator.  This train ride lasts approximately 2.5 hours.
• Take a trip back in time on the Settler’s Supper Train Ride. You’re welcome to wear period clothing on this ride! You will be served a delicious meal, accompanied by desserts and more, during this 3.5-hour ride.

• On the 2.5-hour-long Pangman Farmer’s Market Train Tour, you will travel to the farmer’s market in Pangman Village from Ogema Station. At the market, you can buy a wide variety of items, including vegetables, crafts, baked items, and many other products.
• They also offer a Kids’ Fun Train Ride, which is a 2.5-hour fun-filled adventure for Pangman. Your kids will enjoy activities such as face painting and playing with balloon animals. They will also be served cake and lunch.
• Enjoy a train trip across the prairies to Horizon, where a guide will explain how the 1922 Grain Elevator worked on this 2.5-hour Father’s Day Train Ride.
• Dress in your best wizard costume for the Enchanted 9 ¾ train tour from Ogema to Horizon, complete with magical sights, school colours, non-alcoholic butter beer, and a chocolate frog.

Southern Prairie Railway offers  more food-themed trips:

• A unique pitchfork fondue supper (western steak oil fry) with real pitchforks on the Prairie Pitchfork Fondue Train Ride to Horizon.
• A yummy 3.5 hours Texas Style BBQ and Train Ride adventure where you will enjoy a delicious meal from Bud’s BBQ. You will also get honey-glazed donuts on this ride.
• Celebrate Pangman’s Homecoming with a relaxing countryside train ride, local market visit, retro café treats, museum stop, and thrift shopping before returning to Ogema Train Station.
• On the Craft Beer Train Ride, you can enjoy a delicious locally brewed beer on your ride to Horizon. This also includes a tour of the 1922 Federal Grain Elevator and the ride back to Ogema.
