The University of Alberta Botanic Garden to Reopen on June 1, 2020; Reservations Required for Entry

The University of Alberta Botanic Garden is reopening on June 1 with a set of safety measures in place so that visitors can enjoy the tranquility of the garden, and reconnect to nature without COVID-19 worries.

 

When the garden reopens on June 1, no walk-ups will be allowed and all visitors must make advance reservations. Group size is limited to 15 and any parties in the group that are not in the same household must practice safe physical distancing of 2 metres.

Visitors can enjoy the outdoor gardens, however, all indoor spaces will be closed, including showhouses, Welcome Centre and gift shop. Benches and picnic tables are also off-limits. Water fountains and concessions will also be closed. You can take your own water and small snacks. However, picnics are not permitted, with the exception of Picnic Boxes purchased in advance through the Garden.

One-way routes on the pathways and closure of some garden areas are also implemented that are too confined for appropriate distancing.

All events and programming including special events, private functions, tours, cart services, camps and drop-in programs are cancelled for 2020 season.

The University of Alberta Botanic Garden 2020 Season

This 240-acre garden is maintained by University of Alberta’s Faculty of Agricultural, Life and Environmental Sciences display a wide diversity of plants, with an emphasis on plants suitable for a hardiness zone (4 – 3), including ornamentals, fruits, vegetables, trees and shrubs. Explore Kurimoto Japanese Garden, gardens that showcase amazing collections of herbs, a zone 3 hardy Rose Garden, diverse collection of fragrant peonies, Martagon and Asiatic lilies and primulas in the Alpine Garden and the Native Peoples Garden that grow plants used by indigenous people, and the 4.8-hectare Aga Khan Garden designed by renowned landscape architectural firm Nelson Byrd Woltz and inspired by some of the world’s foremost Islamic architecture and landscapes.
