Alberta has nine statutory holidays.
Statutory holidays are days when employees are entitled to general holiday pay if they have worked for the same employer for at least 30 workdays in the 12 months before the holiday. In addition, employees must not have been absent without consent on the last scheduled day before the holiday or the first day after and must not have refused to work on the general holiday when requested or scheduled.
Here are the statutory holidays in Alberta for 2024:
- New Year’s Day: Monday, January 1, 2024

If Boxing Day falls on a Saturday, it will be observed on the following Monday, and if it falls on a Sunday or a Monday, it will be observed on the following Tuesday.

General Rules: If New Year’s Day, National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, Christmas Day or Boxing Day falls on a non-working day (eg, Sunday), the working day immediately before or after that general holiday is a day off for federal employees. If Canada Day (July 1) falls on a Sunday, the holiday is observed on Monday, July 2.
Some cities and towns in Alberta, such as Calgary and Edmonton, observe September 30 as a statutory holiday for their employees.
The minimum wage for 2024 in Alberta remains at $15 per hour.
