Explore Edmonton’s Nearby Nature Preserves
There are two main types of nature preserves around the Edmonton area: the privately run areas, and the Provincial or National Park areas (notably, Elk Island). These areas have trail systems, interpretive signage, and an abundance of wildlife. Mother’s Day weekend could offer great spring weather for a day of picnics, hiking, exploring nature, and photography.
- The Clifford E. Lee Nature Sanctuary is free to visit and has about 4-5km of trails to explore, depending on the routes you choose. Part of the trail is a wooden boardwalk which follows the wetlands, while the maintained natural pathways lead into the forests and meadows.
- The Cooking Lake-Blackfoot Provincial Area trail system can give you and mom, or you and your family, a wide selection of trail lengths for a Sunday hike. This is a convenient option for those in southeast Edmonton, Sherwood Park, or Beaumont.
- The John E. Poole Wetlands are part of the Lois Hole Centennial PP in northwest Edmonton and St. Albert. The area has boardwalk trails, a large bird population, and picnic sites.

Free Outdoor Fun
Take advantage of the warmer spring weather if you can this Mother’s Day weekend. Doing something outside or recreational can often mean doing something for free on the weekend. Edmonton’s river valley and ravines give us some extra space to enjoy these activities, too.
- Plan a picnic for your Mother’s Day celebrations in one of Edmonton’s blooming city parks. Grab some snacks and a blanket from home, or stop by one of the weekend farmers’ markets. Any one of Edmonton’s river valley parks will have tables, cook stoves, and washrooms- except for Hawrelak!
- Edmonton has a huge network of paved bike trails, all of which are now clear of snow and ice. A river valley or ravine bike ride can easily be combined with a Mother’s Day picnic.
