According to the provincial government, this initiative aims to offset the financial strain caused by the federal carbon tax and rising interest rates.

Finance Minister Peter Bethlenfalvy, in a news release, highlighted the government’s commitment to supporting families during challenging economic times, attributing the initiative to prudent fiscal management. “We are stepping up to help families while continuing to strengthen Ontario’s finances,” he stated.

A family with two adults and three eligible children would receive $1,000 if all criteria are met.

Who is Eligible for Ontario Taxpayer Rebate:

Adults who meet all the following requirements:

  • 18 years or older at the end of 2023
  • resident in Ontario on December 31, 2023
  • filed their 2023 Income Tax and Benefit Returns by December 31, 2024 and
  • not bankrupt or incarcerated in 2024

Children:

  • Families receiving the Canada Child Benefit (CCB) will receive an additional $200 for each child under 18.
  • In cases of shared custody, the payment will be divided based on the most recent CCB data.

For families not receiving the CCB, the government plans to provide an alternative mechanism for the child rebate, with details yet to be announced.
