The City of Calgary is set to host its annual Curbside Treasure Hunt on September 6 and 7, 2025, inviting residents to participate in a citywide event aimed at waste reduction and community engagement.
During the two-day event, Calgarians are encouraged to place reusable items they no longer need on their curbs for others to collect and use, effectively creating a massive, city-spanning garage sale with no cost involved.
The Treasure Hunt not only helps divert items from landfills but also offers a fun and interactive way for residents to declutter their homes and explore different neighbourhoods in search of hidden gems.
“By participating in the Curbside Treasure Hunt, residents play a significant role in reducing waste and reusing items. Last year, we heard inspiring stories of neighbours connecting and enjoying each other’s company while extending the life of gently used items,” said Natalia Gonzalez, Waste Diversion Specialist for The City of Calgary, in a news release announcing the event.
“We invite all Calgarians to take part, whether decluttering their home or searching for their next great find.”
Participants are advised to gather items that are still in usable condition, label them as ‘free,’ and place them at the curb on the designated days.
Following the event, any items not claimed must be removed from the curbside. Residents can consult the city’s waste management resources at calgary.ca/whatgoeswhere to find appropriate recycling, donation, or disposal options for leftover items.
Curbside Treasure Hunt – 2025
What: This initiative underscores Calgary’s commitment to sustainability and community spirit, providing a practical platform for residents to engage in environmentally friendly practices while discovering unique finds within their own city.
How It Works:
- Gather: identify items in your home that you no longer need but could be valuable to someone else.
- Label: mark these items with a “Free” label.
- Place: set the items out at the curb on September 6 and 7.
- Discover: residents and treasure hunters can explore different neighbourhoods, picking up items they find interesting or useful.
- Clean up: remove leftover items from the curbside following the event. Visit calgary.ca/whatgoeswhere to find out where to recycle, donate or dispose of any remaining items.
When: September 6 and 7, 2025.
Where: City-wide

This is a great idea, but we tried last year and it can not be considered an environment cleaning up thing and even though garbage becomes someone’s treasure and keeps things out of the landfill, we found that with no guide to suggest where participation in the Declutter and Discover! Curbside Treasure Hunt! may be more popular, it is a hit and miss just driving around and “hoping” to find what may be treasures for us. Costly too. Any ideas on who may know areas in Calgary, like Garage Sale listings so we can focus on driving around those areas. Maybe a Community Association that has done more effective promotion on this event?
