Walleye and Sauger Fishing Season Opens This Weekend in Manitoba

Get ready to cast your lines as the walleye and sauger fishing season is about to kick off in Manitoba!

Natural Resources and Northern Development Minister Greg Nesbitt announced that walleye and sauger fishing will officially open tomorrow in the Southern fishing division, followed by Lake Winnipeg, Northwest, and North Central divisions a week later on May 20.

Manitoba is reminding anglers to exercise caution, given the late spring conditions. Deteriorating ice, fast-flowing currents, and cold water temperatures may pose risks. Anglers are urged to prioritize safety by adhering to safe boating practices, wearing life jackets, checking water conditions, and approaching with caution.

Furthermore, anglers are encouraged to contribute to the preservation of fish stocks. Due to the late spring conditions, some fish may still be spawning. Nesbitt urged anglers to release spawning fish immediately, as it helps protect fish stocks and ensures the sustainability of Manitoba’s fisheries.

The government says anglers should also familiarize themselves with the new angling regulations that came into effect on April 1. These regulations include changes to possession limits, size restrictions for certain species, and the introduction of new angling license types and fees.

A one-day Manitoba fishing license costs $8.40 for residents and $12.60 for Canadians.

Manitoba seniors can now fish for free by showing proof of age and residency to conservation officers. Additionally, active military members and veterans residing in Manitoba are exempt from angling licenses.

The province’s summer family fishing weekend is from June 9 to 11. During this time, anglers are allowed to fish without a license throughout the province and keep up to the conservation license limit of fish.
