Manitoba is set to expand its global connections as Premier Heather Stefanson announced a new direct flight route from Winnipeg to Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport.

Operated by WestJet, the service is expected to enhance economic growth and job creation in both Canada and the United States.

“I am thrilled to welcome this new direct flight by WestJet connecting two major North American cities, which is poised to boost economic growth and create jobs on both sides of the border,” said Stefanson in a press release.

“Establishing a Winnipeg to Atlanta route is a tremendous opportunity not only for Manitoba businesses to expand their reach and explore new international markets, but for travellers to expand their horizons and explore new cultures and experiences.”

Atlanta, a commercial nexus with seven Fortune 100 companies and Delta Airlines’ major hub, becomes an expedient gateway to over 200 destinations spanning Mexico, the Caribbean, South America, Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and Asia for Manitoba travellers.

The Manitoba government is investing $5 million through the Economic Development Board Secretariat, supporting the Winnipeg Airports Authority and airlines in developing new international routes. The financial support mirrors that offered last year for the direct route connecting Winnipeg with Los Angeles, benefiting Manitoba’s film industry.

The inaugural Winnipeg to Atlanta flight is scheduled for 9 a.m. on Sept. 6.
