This September, the 2024 Runway of Rezilience All Indigenous Fashion Show at Casa Loma in Toronto will introduce a new ice cream flavour, Wiingashk, developed through a partnership between Chef Zach Keeshig and Chapman’s Ice Cream.

Wiingashk, named after the Ojibway word for sweetgrass, features a unique blend of floral vanilla and maple syrup notes.
Chef Keeshig, who is from the Chippewas of Nawash Unceded First Nation at Cape Croker Reserve, owns the Naagan restaurant in Owen Sound, and has crafted this flavour to push the boundaries of Indigenous culinary traditions. This initiative aligns with his ongoing efforts to innovate within Indigenous cuisine using traditional and contemporary methods.
The ice cream will be produced at the Chapman’s facility in Markdale, Ontario, with a commitment to using locally sourced ingredients. It will be available for public purchase at Casa Loma during the day and will also be featured during the evening’s fashion show. Proceeds from the sales will support The DreamCatcher Charitable Foundation.
The fashion event on September 12, organized by Seeing Red Media, will celebrate Indigenous culture and creativity, showcasing the works of renowned designers like Lesley Hampton and featuring performances by Notorious Cree, among other celebrity appearances.
For those unable to attend the fashion show, Wiingashk will also be available at Chef Keeshig’s restaurant, Nagaan (88 8th St E) in Owen Sound.
According to the news release, Chapman’s Ice Cream currently has no plans for broader retail distribution.
