WNBA Adds Toronto as First Canadian Team Beginning 2026

The Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) is charting new territory, announcing its expansion into Canada with Toronto chosen as home to the league’s 14th team.

This groundbreaking move marks the WNBA’s first venture outside the United States, setting the stage for the 2026 season.

The decision follows the sold-out first WNBA game ever played in Canada last year.

“It’s official: Canada is getting a WNBA team! This landmark deal will give opportunities to our remarkable athletes across the country, and on the biggest stage. I can’t wait to see our Canadian women win on the court,” said Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in a news release.

Kilmer Sports Ventures, led by sports veteran Larry Tanenbaum, will own and operate the Toronto team. Tanenbaum is celebrated for his role in steering the Toronto Raptors to their 2019 NBA Championship.

The historic Coca-Cola Coliseum at Exhibition Place will serve as the home court for the Toronto team, with possibilities of playing at Scotiabank Arena and other locations across Canada.

Welcoming the first WNBA team in Canadian history to Toronto, Premier Doug Ford said, “The WNBA will be a fantastic addition to Ontario’s dynamic sports landscape, helping to increase tourism and inspire more women and girls to get involved in basketball. I can’t wait to cheer on Ontario’s newest home team!”

Fans eager to support the Toronto team can begin by securing their season tickets, for what promises to be a thrilling chapter in sports history.
