Alberta has landed a major international hockey event, and the province beat out several North American cities to do it.
Officials confirmed that the World Cup of Hockey 2028 will be held in Calgary and Edmonton in February 2028. It will be the largest international sporting event hosted in Alberta since the 1988 Winter Olympics.
The bid was put together by what organizers called Team Alberta, a partnership involving the provincial government, Explore Edmonton, Tourism Calgary, OEG Sports & Entertainment, and Calgary Sports and Entertainment Corporation.
Per the news release, hosting the tournament is expected to generate about $375 million in economic activity, support more than 43,000 jobs, and create nearly 172,000 hotel room nights across Alberta.
“Alberta is the right choice to host the World Cup of Hockey 2028,” said Danielle Smith, adding that the province’s passion for hockey helped secure the bid.
The tournament will feature 17 games. Alberta will host 10 of them, while Prague will host the remaining seven games.
In Calgary, games will be played at Scotia Place, the new home of the Calgary Flames, scheduled to open for the 2027–28 season in the city’s Culture + Entertainment District downtown. Scotia Place and O2 Arena will each stage six round-robin games and one elimination game.
The semifinals and championship game will take place at Rogers Place.
To secure the event, Alberta’s government committed $15 million, while Calgary and Edmonton, along with their tourism organizations, contributed $5 million toward the rights fee.
The World Cup of Hockey 2028 will be the fourth edition of the tournament, following previous events in 1996, 2004 and 2016.
