As part of the new updates, Canadians will be able to view their Social Insurance Number (SIN) online securely. Service Canada says this digital shift primarily benefits newcomers and international students, who represent the majority of SIN service transactions.
Existing My Service Canada account holders can view their SIN directly within the platform.
For those applying for a new SIN online, a digital confirmation will now be available on their My Service Canada account. Individuals without an account can access their SIN online after setting up an account and verifying their identity. Although this digital option is now available, a SIN confirmation letter will still be dispatched via mail to applicants.
According to the news release, these enhancements will not only reduce the need for in-person visits to Service Canada Centres but also provide a seamless digital experience from start to finish in the SIN application process as users can now bypass physical queues and retain an online record of their SIN for easy access.
Previously My Service Canada Account registration process demanded a SIN for identity validation. Service Canada says successful online SIN applicants can register for My Service Canada account without a SIN number as other identification details, like the Unique Client Identifier or the Birth Registration Number in tandem with a SIN application number, are now acceptable for account registration.
Service Canada says it processes SIN application within five business days, after which it will appear on My Service Canada Account.
This digital transition comes at a time when there’s an escalating demand for SINs, largely due to a surge in newcomers to Canada. In the fiscal year 2022-2023, out of 2.6 million SIN transactions, newcomers, including international students and temporary or permanent residents, comprised 70%, equating to 1.8 million clients.
