The federal government today announced the doubling of goods and services tax credit for six months for low-income families.
GST credit which depends on the annual income and is indexed to inflation is paid quarterly in January, April, July, and October, with the benefit year beginning in July.
Canadians with a family net income of less than $39,826 in 2021 will receive the full Credit amount. The credit gradually reduces as income increases and is fully phased out at about $49,166 for a single person without children, and at about $58,506 for a couple with two children.
The GST credit announced for this benefit year (July 2022to June 2023) is:
- $467 for singles without children;
- $612 for married or common-law partners;
- $612 for single parents; plus
- $161 for each child under the age of 19.
As Canada is experiencing a sharp rise in inflation in 2022, the federal government is planning to double the GST credit for six months.
This means that those who are currently receiving GST credit and those who have filed 2021 taxes will receive double the amount they receive for six months (or a full year benefit in six months) as a one-time, lump-sum payment before the end of the year.
These are examples given in the news release:
- A single mother with one child and $30,000 in net income will receive $386.50 for the July through December 2022 period, and another $386.50 for the January through June 2023 period under the current GST Credit. With the temporary doubling of the GST Credit amounts for six months, she would receive an additional $386.50. In total, she would be receiving about $1,160 this benefit year through the GST Credit.
- A single senior with $20,000 in net income will be receiving $233.50 for the July through December 2022 period and another $233.50 for the January through June 2023 period under the current GST Credit. With the temporary doubling of the GST Credit amounts for six months, this senior would receive an additional $233.50. In total, he would be receiving about $701 this benefit year through the GST Credit.
- A couple with two children and $35,000 in net income will be receiving $467 for the July through December 2022 period and another $467 for the January through June 2023 period under the current GST Credit. With the temporary doubling of the GST Credit amounts for six months, this family would receive an additional $467. In total, they would be receiving about $1,401 this benefit year through the GST Credit.
GST recipients will receive the additional payments automatically and need not apply.
The government says this will deliver $2.5 billion to about 11 million individuals and families in additional support to current GST Credit recipients pending Parliamentary approval and Royal Assent of enabling legislation.
Update: Eligible Canadians will receive their payments in November.
The federal government, today, also announced the free initial step in the free national dental care program for low-income Canadians.

1 2 3 4 Next »I gave quite an accurate detailed account of todays state of poverty for single parents, their children, disabled, seniors. Strangely this site wouldn’t post my ‘Comments’. This Government is more dangerous then I imagined.

20 000 for seniors net income is poverty and seniors who make a little over 20,000 don't get the double gst rebate.Makes me sick.Instead of working all these years and paying taxes i should of went on welfare I'd been much better off.Today i have nothing no dental nothing except whatever perscriptions the government will allow and yes i raised kids and worked almost 40 years at one job cleaning.I am under 75 so i didn't get that raise im just abit over 20,000 so there goes the double gst.Why eveñ work doesn't pay.Sure didn't me.This sucks.

Things are getting out of hand in this country. The poor get poorer while the others continue to dominate and take the benefits that were organized by those feeling the squeeze and sitting at home or in a shelter, penniless. We worked to make this country what it is today. Not the youths, not the childbearing mothers and fathers sitting at home, not the welfare recipients who received a big boost just recently, it's the men and women who worked, volunteered and served this nation in making it one of the top countries in this universe. We are proud to be Canadians but not proud of this Government.
So the bill has not been past yet?? So when it is will seniors making under $20,000 will have the amount deposit into their accounts?
I am a senior and did not receive the double GST amount?
What month are we to receive this?
I make less than 39,000?
The credit will be given only after bill approval in parliament and royal assent. As per the news release, by end of this year.
