You Will Get Double the GST Tax Credit For Six Months This Benefit Year

The federal government today announced the doubling of goods and services tax credit for six months for low-income families.

GST credit which depends on the annual income and is indexed to inflation is paid quarterly in January, April, July, and October, with the benefit year beginning in July.

Canadians with a family net income of less than $39,826 in 2021 will receive the full Credit amount. The credit gradually reduces as income increases and is fully phased out at about $49,166 for a single person without children, and at about $58,506 for a couple with two children.

The GST credit announced for this benefit year (July 2022to June 2023) is:

  • $467 for singles without children;
  • $612 for married or common-law partners;
  • $612 for single parents; plus
  • $161 for each child under the age of 19.

As Canada is experiencing a sharp rise in inflation in 2022, the federal government is planning to double the GST credit for six months.

This means that those who are currently receiving GST credit and those who have filed 2021 taxes will receive double the amount they receive for six months (or a full year benefit in six months) as a one-time, lump-sum payment before the end of the year.

These are examples given in the news release:

  • A single mother with one child and $30,000 in net income will receive $386.50 for the July through December 2022 period, and another $386.50 for the January through June 2023 period under the current GST Credit. With the temporary doubling of the GST Credit amounts for six months, she would receive an additional $386.50. In total, she would be receiving about $1,160 this benefit year through the GST Credit.
  • A single senior with $20,000 in net income will be receiving $233.50 for the July through December 2022 period and another $233.50 for the January through June 2023 period under the current GST Credit. With the temporary doubling of the GST Credit amounts for six months, this senior would receive an additional $233.50. In total, he would be receiving about $701 this benefit year through the GST Credit.
  • A couple with two children and $35,000 in net income will be receiving $467 for the July through December 2022 period and another $467 for the January through June 2023 period under the current GST Credit. With the temporary doubling of the GST Credit amounts for six months, this family would receive an additional $467. In total, they would be receiving about $1,401 this benefit year through the GST Credit.

GST recipients will receive the additional payments automatically and need not apply.

The government says this will deliver $2.5 billion to about 11 million individuals and families in additional support to current GST Credit recipients pending Parliamentary approval and Royal Assent of enabling legislation.

Update: Eligible Canadians will receive their payments in November.

The federal government, today, also announced the free initial step in the free national dental care program for low-income Canadians.

    I gave quite an accurate detailed account of todays state of poverty for single parents, their children, disabled, seniors. Strangely this site wouldn’t post my ‘Comments’. This Government is more dangerous then I imagined.

    It says 1 time payment for gst for next six months. If federal government says 1 time top up .that means u will only get what u usually get.so I get 213$ that means I get 1 time top up of 213$ wow and that suppose to be helping .I thought we were gonna get more on our gst for January and April of 2023.

    The government has promised to help low income people and we have to wait until the end of the year for help….we are in dire need now…why are people being made to wait. This unnecessary stress in not necessary.

    Things are getting out of hand in this country. The poor get poorer while the others continue to dominate and take the benefits that were organized by those feeling the squeeze and sitting at home or in a shelter, penniless. We worked to make this country what it is today. Not the youths, not the childbearing mothers and fathers sitting at home, not the welfare recipients who received a big boost just recently, it’s the men and women who worked, volunteered and served this nation in making it one of the top countries in this universe. We are proud to be Canadians but not proud of this Government.

    Yea I’m a single male in my mid 30s on disability who makes less than 30k a year and I never got double GST credit. I bet people in Ontario and Quebec got it. Trudeau just wants to buy votes and I’m an Albertan. Trudeau don’t care about Alberta. It’s Ontario and Quebec that have all the voting power so I bet they got it.

    When Trudeau gave the $500 to seniors over 75 I asked why ALL Seniors were not getting it. Why the discrimination?
    Answer I got was it’s harder to get work to subsidize your income if you are over 75. Also over 75s are more likely to get sick and need a retirement home. Oh ya. Government is going to get their money back.
    A senior is a senior….cost of food, gas, housing does not change once you get to 75. Cost of food, gas, housing has dramatically increased but our pensions only go up by pennies. Disgusting government. We need a change, someone who cares about actual Canadians that have worked all their lives. Not just the ones that will vote Trudeau in yet again. This country was in the black until his father became PM we have been getting deeper in debt ever since.

    Interesting how no one has bothered to tell Canada Revenue about this, because their website does not show the impending amount to be paid on October 5th to be doubled, but rather, just increased about 10%.

    People should be asking whether this is just more balloon juice from Trudeau, and if not, why doesn’t the CRA — the government agency that actually pays out the GST Refunds — know about it?

    What I understood the payment for july2023 and Oct 2023 gst cheque will be doubled
    And if your rent is more then 30% of your income then you will qualify for the 500 dollars one time payment to help pay rent.

    The rent assistance is only for assisted housing or subsidized not every person paying rent lol you need to look this on the CRA site and it’s not been approved yet anyways

    Don’t be confused. The gst doubling is for july and October only. For example single seniors who now get 116. Per quarter ( 232 for tge 6 month period ) will receive 232 dollars xtra. The 500 rent eligibility is worse. Income 20 thousand or less rent recipients and provide landlord info. So for those if any that pay for example the granny suite at a siblings home and they don’t claim rental income you do not get it. Another rip off for seniors. The dental fir kids under 12 well that’s just absurd

    Thank you for the double GST it helps us low income ODSP recipients as we barely got a raise from Mr.Ford I only received a $34.00 raise which really won’t help much with groceries going up all the time which is really depressing 😐

    Clearly many people didn’t actually bother to read before commenting
    Singles without children were the first demographic mentioned. Seniors were the last. It explains how the benefit will be paid before the end of the year; it does not say the increase showed up in July 🙄

    I think it’s ridiculous that you use a single mother rather than a single parent. I’ve been the sole provider and care taker of my child for her entire life to date she’s 11 now. No child support, no breaks, no shared custody. Women are not the only ones raising their children eh.
