Since the pandemic hit, one of the most common activities is going for a walk. It’s physically distant and it’s really good for you! If you’re looking to get some exercise, explore the great outdoors, and have some fun, check out these 25 Urban Walking Trails in Calgary. There’s an assortment of lengths, elevations, and views. Bring a snack, your camera, and your binoculars and keep an eye out for picnic spots, selfie stations, and birds. It’s easy to enjoy the beauty that is all around us if we just know where to look.

Hike or bike along the edges of the Bow and Elbow rivers which stretching from Centre Street Bridge to 9 Avenue SE. Enjoy architecture, sights and sounds of East Village and much more!

Bebo Grove Loop

Bebo Grove offers an easy hike for young and old along Fish Creek. It’s a 5.6 kilometer loop with wonderful views of nature and wildlife, right here in the city. Bring along a snack and enjoy a picnic along the way in one of the seating areas.

Glenmore Reservoir Trail

The Glenmore Reservoir Trail is a popular one! It’s good for all skill levels and there are a lot of variations available to you. It’s 15.4 kilometres long, and it’s a great way to feel like you’re out of the city. Keep an eye out for chickadees and other bird friends.

Weaselhead Pink and Red Trail Loop

Head to Weaselhead Flats for this awesome trail. It’s 5 kilometers and takes you through a beautiful area of Calgary including the Elbow River, the Glenmore Reservoir, and lots of awesome trees. It’s also a great cross-country ski spot in the winter.

South Nose Hill Loop

 

This is an awesome trail for you and your pooch. Go to Nose Hill Park and do this 6.1 kilometer loop along the south side of the park. If you’re looking for a longer or shorter hike, Nose Hill has a lot of trails to offer, just pick one that suits you!

Paskapoo Slopes From Cougar Ridge

Head from the Cougar Ridge community into Paskapoo on your mountain bike or on foot (just know there are a lot of bikers). This 3.4 kilometer loop will take you through some great greenery and unpaved paths. Take a walk on the wild side with this stunning trail.

Douglas Fir Trail

An out and back trail along the Bow River, this lovely trail has a lot of trees and peaceful spots. It’s 5.8 kilometers and takes you on a scenic trip through Southwest Calgary.

Discovery Ridge and John Simonot Loop

This is a perfect 5K! Enjoy some time by the river and through beautiful trails. It’s a great trail for kids, and you’re likely to see some beautiful birds. Bring your dog, but keep them on a leash.

Baker and Bowmont Park Loop

Why go to one park when you can go to two? Head through Baker Park and Bowmont Park on a 12.7 kilometer loop. You’ll see awesome park land, the Bow River, and wildlife. If you’re in the Northwest, be sure to check this one out!

12 Mile Coulee

Located along Stoney Trail in the Northwest, 12 Mile Coulee is a great out and back trail in Calgary. It’s 4.2 kilometers of birds, wildflowers, and other nature finds. Head out on foot or on your mountain bike.

Prince’s Island Loop

Prince’s Island is a Calgary favourite, just north of Eau Claire. Take the full loop around the island for a nice 2.7 kilometer stroll. You’ll see lots of water birds and picnicers. Bring your own lunch and stay a while!

Inglewood Bird Sanctuary

When you head on this 2.3 kilometer hike, you might see otters, geese, and beavers. There are a lot of birds to spot, and interesting foliage and plants. This hidden gem is sure to delight you if you haven’t been. There’s plenty of water, nature, and wildlife to see, so bring your camera!

Carburn Pond Loop

Head to Carburn Park and take a trip around the pond! This loop is 2.4 kilometers long and takes you around three man made ponds. It’s a beautiful walk that also takes you by the Bow River. Bring your binoculars for some bird watching.

Christmas Tree Trail Loop

The Christmas Tree Trail is a loop in Edworthy Park. It’s 2.1 kilometers around and takes you along the Bow River in the Southwest, and into the park. There’s lots of space to bring a picnic along or through a frisbee. This is especially fun in the winter when the large evergreen trees are covered in snow.

Sue Higgins Park Loop

 

The Sue Higgins Park is home to a large pathway that stretches beside Deerfoot Trail in the south. There’s a large off-leash park in the middle, so bring your furry pals along. There are some lovely stops along the Bow River. It’s mostly paved and well maintained.

Bow River Pathway Loop

This is a 6.3 kilometer loop that takes you on either side of the Bow River. You’ll get some epic views and some fresh air, right here in the city. You can have a dog on a leash, so grab your friends and head for a beautiful walk!

Elbow River Pathway

If you’re looking for a longer hike, check out this nearly 21 kilometer path that takes you along the Elbow River. This walk is doable by people of all ages. It’s often used as a bike path, so keep an eye out, or jump on our own bicycle!

Votier Flats

This is a great mix of paved and gravel paths for you to explore! It’s a 9 kilometer path, but it can be shortened or made longer with the intricate pathway system. It takes you through the Votier Flats section of Fish Creek Provincial Park.

Pearce Estate Park

Let yourself be guided through a tranquil wetland in the middle of the city at Pearce Estate. A signed interpretive trail guides you through a constructed wetland filled with native plants and animals. The signs tell how the wetland came to be and describes the wildlife seen around you.

Eastlands Loop

This one is for the mountain bikers! Bring your bike and take this 4.3 kilometer loop for a ride. Near the Calgary Olympic Park, the Eastlands Loop has forest views and fun paths. This is not a dog friendly path.

Stoney Trail

Hit up Stoney Trail, named after the nearby freeway. It takes you along an unpaved path that can be muddy when it’s been raining. When it’s nice, you can see wildflowers and people walking their dogs or riding their bikes on this 5.6 kilometer trail.

River Park Loop

 

This is an awesome one for you and your dog. It heads through an off-leash park on a 2.7 kilometer loop. You can get some pretty great views of the Elbow River and downtown Calgary. There’s lots of room for throwing the ball around and meeting other pooches!

Elliston Park Loop

Check out the Elliston Park Loop! It’s a 3.4 kilometer hike that takes you around Elliston Lake. You can plan to hang out here afterwards with their picnic tables and off-leash dog area. So bring your dogs and head on this beautiful urban hike.

Griffith Woods Perimeter Loop

At nearly 7 kilometers, this hike around Griffith Woods is the perfect pick-me-up on a gloomy day. It’s a great loop that allows you to see a lot of different parts of Calgary, including Elbow River and part of the Discovery Ridge neighbourhood. There are plenty of other trails to choose from in this area.

If it’s time to stretch your legs and get outside, head on this awesome hike. This epic 15.1 kilometer trail takes you from Edworthy Park to Prince’s Island and back, all along the Bow River. There are plenty of options to switch it up as you go, so it’s a new hike every time!

Tom Campbell’s Hill

This quick single kilometer loop has amazing views of downtown Calgary. It really puts the urban in urban hiking. Enjoy nature and the city as one as you overlook the skyline and get some fresh air. Feel free to bring your four-legged friend as well!
