Vulcan for the Trek Convention & Spock Days

Vul-Con is the Original grassroots Star Trek Convention. The sci-fi show is part of what put Vulcan on the map, along with the town’s reconstructed Starship Enterprise, and other Trekkie items you can find around town. Vulcan is hosting their annual Star Trek convention this weekend, and tickets are on sale now! This year’s celebrity guests include John Billingsley and Chris Doohan (son of the late and great Scotty, aka James Doohan).

Waterton Lakes National Park for Wildflower viewing

Alberta and its National Parks all offer unique sightseeing, recreation, and accommodations. And what makes Waterton NP so unique, especially this time of year is its abundance of wildflowers. There are so many in bloom between now and late July that Water Lakes NP is the Wildflower Capital of Canada. There are several places around the park for overnight camping, as well as a few accommodation options at the townsite.

William A. Switzer Provincial Park

As one of the Provincial Parks close to Jasper National Park, you can expect many things to do over your weekend of camping. There are two campgrounds within the PP with sites available for the coming weekend: Gregg Lake with power, power/water, and no service sites; or Cache Lake, which has no services, and which is perfect for a rustic tenting weekend.

Overnight camping at Emerson Bridge Park is on a first-come-first-served basis. Head out early on the Friday if you can secure a tent or RV site at this riverside campground. With the Red Deer River steps away from your site, you have access to a place for a dip on a hot day, or a place to launch a canoe/kayak. Other park amenities include a ball diamond, playground, flush toilets, showers, abd beach volleyball courts.

The Spring Lake Campground (south of Grande Prairie) offers forest camping with dense trees to provide privacy between each of the sites. Spring Lake is a smaller lake in Saddle Hills but is teaming with plenty of fish. The boat launch is a short drive from campground where you can bring your canoe, kayak, or rowboat to paddle, fish, or relax.
