The city previously decided to cancel the Canada Day fireworks considering “cultural sensitivities.”
The city says an aerial fireworks display will be introduced as part of the Canada Day celebrations on July 1, 2023.
According to the news release, the decision comes after numerous Calgarians expressed their desire for an aerial fireworks show to mark the occasion.
“We have heard from many Calgarians as well as members of City Council that while the pilot program is valued, they would also appreciate an aerial fireworks display to celebrate on July 1,” said David Duckworth, City Manager.
Per the news release, efforts are currently underway to determine an appropriate location for the fireworks display, taking into account various factors such as cultural sensitivities, late-night traffic, noise, over-crowding, wildlife, and environmental concerns.
The City aims to strike a balance between celebrating the event and ensuring minimal disruption to residents and the natural environment.
In addition to the aerial fireworks display, the City is planning a range of inclusive and educational activities for Calgarians to enjoy on Canada Day 2023. The festivities will include diverse programming that celebrates culture and community.
The pyrotechnic show at Fort Calgary will be enhanced, featuring a captivating display of lights and sounds launched from the main stage during the headliner act.
Jeff Chase, Director of Partnerships with The City of Calgary, emphasized that the programming for Canada Day will offer a mix of participatory, celebratory, and reflective experiences.
“Calgarians will have a variety of options to observe July 1 in a way most meaningful to them,” he continued.
As further details and updates regarding the fireworks display and Canada Day celebrations emerge, the City will share the information with the public, allowing residents to plan and participate in the festivities accordingly.
