Calgary Cancels 2023 Canada Day Fireworks Recognizing ‘Cultural Sensitivities’

The City of Calgary is planning an innovative approach to the traditional Canada Day celebrations by launching an enhanced pyrotechnic show at Fort Calgary this July.

The enhanced pyrotechnic will feature a “visually stunning display of lights and sounds that will be launched from the main stage at Fort Calgary during the headliner act”.

The new display aims to address the cultural, community, and environmental impacts of typical fireworks, according to Franca Gualtieri, Manager of Arts & Culture at The City of Calgary.

The city of Calgary press release reads, “The City recognizes the cultural sensitivities around fireworks displays in relation to Truth and Reconciliation. This year, July 1 also marks the 100th anniversary of the Chinese Immigration Act. For many Calgarians, this is a day of mourning or reflection.”

Calgary says the new approach will reduce traffic, noise, and overcrowding at popular viewing sites, making room for emergency services and limiting disruptions to local wildlife. This move also respects Canada’s Migratory Bird Act which protects nesting birds during breeding and nesting periods.

The 2023 Canada Day celebration will also offer a variety of programming, ranging from participatory to reflective experiences.

Feedback from citizens, community and cultural groups will be collected over the next year to guide future decisions about Canada Day fireworks.

Update – May 25: Calgary is bringing back Canada Day fireworks after receiving feedback on its decision to cancel Canada Day fireworks announced last week.

Details about locations, activities, and performers for the upcoming celebration will be announced in June.

If city council wants a light show to replace fireworks…then do it…just stop cowardly hiding behind low IQ, lazy virtue signalling. Also, there is a way to make a “light show” visible so most Calgarians can see it in the night sky, you just chose to be stunted in your thinking and planning, and weak in your imagination.

Apparently no immigrant, refugee nor multi generations born Canadian Citizen has any culture or history to be grateful for and celebrated or worthy of recognition in a traditional manner? Instead, stay home, flagellate yourself and beg forgiveness for every transgression, slight or insensitive act perpetrated by anyone and everyone at any time in history, with or without your knowledge and resolve to hang your head forever in shame….oh, that is, unless it offends someone who hasn’t joined the, “Whine of the Month” club or “Axe to Grind Society” yet. Sheesh!

I suggest everyone across the city have their own fireworks party.
This cancel culture mentality is too much.

Oh the hypocrisy… “addressing cultural sensitivities” by removing Canadian culture. Fireworks are how we celebrate because everyone can see them all over town. A united event we all participate in. Stop destroying Canadian Culture..
