Reflections from Stories of Exclusion
The Jing Wo Cultural Association will perform a Lion Dance at 1:30 outside the cSpace Eau Claire Neighbourhood Hub. Inside the Hub from 2-4:00, there will be a discussion facilitated by Brian Wong with the Stories of Exclusion artists. The project sheds light on the impact of the Chinese Immigration Act, also known as the Chinese Exclusion Act, which was passed 100 years ago. The artists will share their responses to interviews with Chinese Calgarians affected by the Act, providing an alternative celebration that recognizes intergenerational trauma caused by colonialism. Banff’s Downtown Pedestrian Zone will be transformed into an entertainment and activity space for Canada Day. A variety of performances and surprises will take place throughout the day, including Indigenous performances, rock, blues, and folk music. There won’t be a fireworks show this year, but there will be marching bands, puppetry, chalk art, and a people-powered parade. Different areas will feature stages and activities for families and visitors to enjoy. The Bear’s Den on Bear Street will provide a refreshing zone with food, storytelling, and live music.
