Digital Overdose Response System app or DORS is now available for download in Calgary. The application is meant to protect those who are using recreational drugs when alone at their residence.

The Digital Overdose Response System (DORS) app was developed by Aware 360 Ltd, an Alberta company, and allows those using opioids or other substances to summon emergency response to their location if they become unconscious.

How it works:

As per the DORS website:

  • Download the app from Google Play or the Apple Store on your phone. Add only your cellphone number to register.
  • When using alone, press the Start Button on the app and confirm your location. A timer will count down. It can be extended or cancelled at any time.
  • If you don’t cancel or extend your session and the timer ends, an alarm will try to alert you and an emergency alert is sent to a Respond Centre.
  • The Response Centre will call you to see if you require assistance. If you say yes or don’t answer, medical help will be sent to your location.

The DORS app can be downloaded to a smart phone free of charge from any app store or via DORSApp.ca.

In addition to connecting individuals with emergency services, the DORS app also includes information on treatment and recovery services through the Addiction Resources tab on the app and the DORS website.

Alberta says while the app can be downloaded by anyone, it can only be used by those in Calgary and surrounding areas at this time.

Alberta is planning to expand DORS app to Edmonton is by the end of September.

As per the news release, all information is kept confidential and information on location and phone number are collected and only used when an EMS dispatch is required.

Alberta has invested $325,000 into the DORS app development and testing.

205 people died from opioids and other substances in the municipality of Calgary from January 2021 to May 2021 and 70 per cent of opioid-related fatalities in Alberta occurred in a private residence in 2020.
