B.C. Increasing Minimum Wage by $1.10 on June 1

British Columbia’s minimum wage will increase from $15.65 to $16.75 an hour on June 1, 2023.

The increase of 6.9% is meant to reflect the province’s average annual inflation rate in 2022, and is in line with the government’s policy of tying annual increases to inflation.

The raise will positively impact around 150,000 workers who currently earn less than $16.75.

The federal government increased the minimum wage from $15.55 to $16.65 on April 1. This means that on June 1st, even federal workers earning minimum wage in B.C. will be eligible for the higher provincial minimum wage of $16.75 per hour.

Recently, the Ontario government announced a 6.8% increase to the minimum wage, raising it to $16.55 per hour from October 1, 2023.

With this raise, B.C. workers will have the highest minimum wage among all provinces (until now), and it has increased from one of the lowest in the country at $10.45 per hour in 2015.

Yukon has the highest hourly minimum wage in Canada at $16.77.
