Forecasts indicate total precipitation could range from 50 to 100 millimetres, with some areas near the southern foothills potentially seeing up to 200 millimetres.

Within Calgary, approximately 100 millimetres of rain is expected between June 21 and 23, primarily affecting the Bow and Elbow Basins. In anticipation, city officials are implementing measures to manage water levels and mitigate potential safety risks.

To accommodate the expected rain, water is being released from the Glenmore Reservoir. This action will lower reservoir levels and create additional capacity, according to Frank Frigo, the City’s Manager of Environmental Management. Frigo said the city does not anticipate major river flooding, but it is preparing for the possibility of higher-than-expected flows.

Some river pathways may be closed due to increased flow rates. Residents are advised to stay away from fast-moving water, avoid low-lying areas, and keep children and pets away from riverbanks. Lawn furniture and unsecured outdoor items should be removed or fastened in preparation for possible wind and flooding.

Officials are asking residents to check for boating advisories and remain off the water if warnings are in place.

The City also asks residents to monitor storm drains for pooling water. If standing water remains 90 minutes after the rain stops, residents should report it via the 311 app or online, including a photo if possible, to help prioritize city response.
