Canstruction Calgary is an excellent initiative that raises awareness of the importance of fighting hunger while also showcasing the creativity of Calgary’s engineering, design, and architecture professionals.
Since 2006, this event has provided nearly 480,468 pounds of food to needy Calgarians. Canstruction Calgary is the local chapter of Canstruction, founded by the Society for Design Administration, an affiliate organization of the American Institute of Architects. The event is held in more than 50 cities across North America.

This year, participating teams have created structures following the theme, “Retro Toys and Games You CAN Play,” which will be judged and displayed at Southcentre Mall until April 21.
Afterwards, all the food cans used in the designs will go to the Calgary Food Bank.
The teams participating this year are Associated Engineering, Bantrel Co., Calgary Co-op and Elan Construction, City of Calgary, Detechtion, Fluor Corporation, Spartan Controls, Suncor and Tri Innovations. The donated non-perishable food from the event will help fill more than 10,000 emergency food hampers.

If you are planning to go and see these giant structures, remember to take a donation of non-perishable food items. Furthermore, this year, Calgarians will also be invited to participate in a People’s Choice Award for their favourite structure by voting online.
