According to the Canadian Food Inspection Agency, the recall was triggered during an investigation into a foodborne illness outbreak.

As of the latest update, 23 illnesses have been confirmed across seven provinces. Alberta has reported the highest number with nine cases, followed by Saskatchewan with five and British Columbia with three. Manitoba and Ontario have each reported two cases, while New Brunswick and Newfoundland and Labrador have reported one case each. Five people have been hospitalized. No deaths have been reported. Those affected range in age from 1 to 87, and 52 percent are female.

Food contaminated with E. coli O26 doesn’t necessarily look or smell spoiled, but it can still cause serious illness. Reported symptoms range from nausea and vomiting to severe abdominal cramps and watery or bloody diarrhea. In more serious cases, complications can include seizures, strokes, kidney failure requiring dialysis, or long-term kidney damage. Deaths have occurred in severe E. coli cases, though none have been reported in this outbreak.

The CFIA is continuing its food safety investigation and verifying that recalled products are being removed from the marketplace. Consumers who believe they became sick after consuming the products are advised to contact a healthcare provider. Recalled items should be thrown out or returned to the place of purchase.
