City of Toronto to Open Community Gardens and Allotment Gardens

imageThe City of Toronto has announced that it will begin opening community gardens and allotment gardens from this week for the 2020 gardening season.

 

Through a news release, the City said that it will follow a phased approach in opening its 81 community gardens and 12 allotment gardens to ensure public safety while providing access to an essential source of fresh food.

Community gardens will begin to open this week on a location-by-location basis.

Allotment gardens will begin to open during the week of May 11.

The City has released guidelines that gardens must meet including how to achieve physical distancing at each location and guidance on the cleaning and disinfection of commonly used equipment and surfaces.

More than 1,300 Torontonians use the City’s allotment gardens and the community gardens and their volunteers support more than 25 community agencies and provide them with 1,133 to 2,267 kilograms (2,000 to 5,000 pounds) of fresh produce.

According to the news release, the garden site readiness operations were underway and the city is installing handwashing station equipment at various locations. The City of Toronto has issued 1,357 permits for 2020 season to date.

Today, Ontario Premier Doug Ford said that Ontario is progressing towards reopening for retail stores, parks and cottagers, if the COVID-19 numbers keep going down.
