Events Description
Join us for a casual talk night around the fire at one of Calgary’s parks this summer, and hear from wildlife biology professionals about what their work looks like in the province, the issues they face, and how things have changed over the years.
Julie will be there to show what it’s like at the early stages of her career, Kelsey will share her experience as a mid-level consulting biologist, and Cleve will provide the perspective of a senior-level biologist. Our professionals will be sharing their perspectives on the industry, challenges they face, and the importance of biologists’ work with industry/municipalities.
Julie Siemens is a Wildlife Biologist based in northeast Alberta with experience in pre-disturbance wildlife surveys, amphibian relocation projects, and bird and amphibian monitoring. She holds a BSc in Zoology and has built additional hands-on experience through volunteer work in wildlife rehabilitation and bird banding programs. Her work focuses on field-based wildlife assessments and technical reporting for environmental compliance. She is particularly interested in how field data can directly inform better wildlife and habitat management decisions, and in fostering collaborative approaches between conservation and industry.
Kelsey Morin is a Professional Biologist that specializes in environmental regulation and aquatics. She has an applied Bachelors of Science from Mount Royal University. Her career launched following the 2013 flood where she worked as a Water Act coordinator on flood recovery approvals. Craving more field work, she moved onto the Whirling Disease program, electrofishing the eastern slopes. Kelsey currently works for a small environmental consulting outfit where she coordinates field surveys, completes aquatic assessments, facilitates regulatory approvals and oversees construction mitigation for civil infrastructure improvement projects.
Cleve Wershler graduated from the University of Calgary in 1973 with a BSc in Zoology and Botany. From 1973 to 1976, he was employed as a resource management specialist with Alberta Parks. Since 1978, he has operated Sweetgrass Consultants Ltd., a consulting firm specializing in conservation work on rare and endangered species, habitats and significant natural features. Cleve has been involved in a large number of wildlife related projects in the Mixed Grassland Natural Region of southeastern Alberta. This experience has provided him with an excellent understanding of the status and dynamics of grassland wildlife species and habitats.
