Events Description
The event is a chance to nurture your inner Scot, come to a skating party with a spirit of Scottish fun and fortitude wearing tartans and kilts.
This event is open to everyone. It’s a chance to nurture your inner Scot. You don’t have to be Scottish. You don’t even have to wear a kilt.
To celebrate the bicentennial of Canada’s first prime minister, Sir John A. Macdonald, the Scottish Society of Ottawa launched the first Kilt Skate event on January 31, 2015. Other cities joined in the celebration including Montreal, Ottawa, Winnipeg, Calgary, Saskatoon.
The St. Andrew Caledonian Society is Calgary’s oldest non profit society, established in 1884. Calgary has strong Scottish roots, it’s an integral part of our multicultural heritage. The name of our city itself comes from the Gaelic word for clear running water.
For the past eight years, Calgarians have come out to celebrate our common Scottish roots with bare knees and ice. Previous years Kilt Skates have featured not only kilted skaters, but pipers, Highland dancers, the Scottish Society Gaelic Choir singing O Canada in English and Gaelic and offering the public free Hot Chocolate.
