Update from Organiser:
Regarding Covid 19 and the Winter Fish-Off, we are currently assessing the risks of the corona virus. At the moment the event is planning to go ahead as scheduled. We are taking the risk seriously and conducting a risk assessment according to the Canadian Public Health guidelines.
There are further measures we can implement to increase the social distance inherent in this event
– By letting people on the ice at 7am instead of 9 we would all but eliminate the lineup, while still giving advantage to those who get there early.
– Our holes are drilled on a 15’ grid, more than double the recommended 6’ social distance recommended by health officials.
– Volunteers will be trained in social distancing practices.
Ultimately there is no way to eliminate all the risks and people will have to make their own judgement and accept those risks when choosing to come to the event. Our biggest concern is that people are travelling here from all corners of this province and all over Canada. Some of these people will be in high risk groups and from remote places with poor access to medical services.
There is the chance that a worsening of the COVID-19 situation in Manitoba/ Northwest Ontario, government intervention or other extenuating circumstances could cause this event to be cancelled.
In that case, there is a contingency plan laid out in the official rules of the event that would have to be implemented. Our guaranteed prize list would be awarded in a random public draw of ticket stubs on the following weekend.
Obviously no one wants this to happen but it is plan B.
We appreciate the support over the years, and are hoping for the health and safety of all Canadians in this difficult time.
Stay tuned for further updates.
