Events Description

The EmpowerMen Project, (a part of the Ma Mawi Wi Chi Itata Centre), will host a free public event, entitled Game Changers: Building a Better Sports Culture, at the Canadian Museum for Human Rights the evening of November 10, 2026.

The evening will begin with a screening of Code of Misconduct, a documentary by award-winning director Sébastien Trahan, which documents in-depth the recent Hockey Canada scandal and subsequent 2025 criminal trial of five members of the Canadian junior hockey team, while also uncovering the high-pressure male-dominated sports culture that gave rise to this and other high-profile stories.

It will be followed by a panel discussion with experts from the field, including Rick Westhead, whose reporting shed light on the Hockey Canada story and provided the basis for his bestselling book We Breed Lions: Confronting Canada’s Troubled Hockey Culture. The panel will also include representatives from Hockey Manitoba, the University of Manitoba, and Brandon University. There will be capacity for up to 500 guests, who will have the opportunity to engage with the panelists during a Q&A following the panel.

Game Changers: Building a Better Sports Culture will offer engaging discussions and expert perspectives as we explore how we can build a positive hockey and sports culture, understand and challenge underlying harmful norms, address transparency and accountability and equip athletes, coaches, parents, and especially male leaders with a healthier model for both the sport and their communities.
