Toronto has one of the most expensive public transport systems among 45 cities worldwide, finds a study by Picodi.com.
The study, by the website which offers discount codes, looked at single ticket prices and monthly passes that allow unlimited travel within the city limits.
In Canada, Calgary has the most expensive single ticket at $3.60, and Toronto has the highest price for monthly passes at $156.
Charlottetown has the lowest cost for both single tickets and monthly passes at $2 and $20, respectively.
For monthly passes, Calgary is the second most expensive at $112, followed by Winnipeg at $107.8, Vancouver at $102.55, and Montreal at $94.
Montreal has the second highest single ticket cost at $3.50, followed by Toronto at $3.20 and Saskatoon, Yellowknife, and Moncton at $3 each.

Worldwide, the study found that the least favourable ratio of transport expenses to average wages was in São Paulo, where monthly access to all modes of public transport costs 14.3% of the average wage.
A monthly pass in Toronto is 3.7% of the average net wage in the city, which is less expensive than London but costlier than Paris, Melbourne, Stockholm and New York.
The most expensive single tickets were found in London, Zurich, and Oslo.
Three cities out of 45 offer free public transport for citizens: Luxembourg, Tallinn, and Valletta.

The study was based on prices as of March 2023, and average net wages were taken from numbeo.com. The monthly passes included in the study allow for unlimited travel with all means of transportation within the city limits. The study did not include cities where one mode of transport is offered by multiple operators with different pricing policies or cities where it is not possible to buy a monthly pass.
